COGITO in Space, at TecArt 2018. February 10th, at location Worm
We had a great time at TecArt, where Daniela de Paulis, Guillaume Dumas and I presented COGITO in Space, conceived by artist Daniela de Paulis, in an interactive installation. Participants could sign up to have their EEG recorded while, within the 3D space of the Oculus Rift, watched the amazing video Daniela created with Sandro Bocci. We measures five people during the day, who’s EEG was transformed into sound in real-time by our open-source interstellar EEG-transmission protocol. You can find a sound example of an EEG transmission that day below.
This was the first time we connected all the elements in a single day, i.e. recording and transmission, with the latter done via a Skype connection to the Dwingelo radio telescope, operated by radio-amateur Jan van Muijlwijk, who gave a great and fun introduction of the history and current state of the telescope. We now feel very confident and prepared for the upcoming opening of the official event, currently planned for mid-June at the ASTRON facility at Dwingelo, The Netherlands. During this event, EEG recording, conversion and transmission will all occur in real-time!
The location at Worm turned out to be quite a perfect spot, and the great staff was able to help us set up two video projections showing the EEG, a great trailer for an upcoming documentary, and later the Skype connection with the radio telescope and a map by Stellarium showing where the telescope was pointing in the night sky. The audience was great, and we felt blessed recording and transmitting the first EEG of a young child into space. He counted down his own EEG transmission!
I also felt lucky to have next to us a booth by Mariette, from the online sound-art-media-store Underbelly. I went home with a pile of books: more study material for the EEGsynth!
